The University of Idaho awards over $21 million in scholarships each year.
The guaranteed or upfront scholarships such as the
Presidential Scholarships, UI Achievement, Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and Alumni Scholarships are not tied to any specific area of study. These scholarships are awarded as early as December to new students. Applying for these and other UI scholarships is easy.
Students who meet the February 15th priority date for admission will be given first consideration for other general and departmental scholarships that are merit-based. Only students seeking need-based scholarships and federal financial aid should submit a FAFSA to the U.S. Department of Education Federal Processor so it is received by the priority date. Notifications of awards are mailed to these students beginning in March. As funds become available, scholarships will continue to be awarded.
Students who change their major should notify Student Financial Aid Services, since this change may affect eligibility for some UI scholarships. The notification to our office ensures that the student is receiving consideration from the appropriate department and/or college scholarship committee(s).
UI Scholarships as Related to Cost of Education: The Financial Aid Office will establish a cost of education for designated categories each year. That cost includes tuition, fees, books and supplies, room, board, miscellaneous costs and transportation. The amount for each category is reviewed each year. Students may appeal their cost of education in writing to the office if they have unusual costs for the defined enrollment period. The same guidelines for adjusting the cost of education is used for federal, state and institutional funds.
University of Idaho scholarship funds are not be awarded to students with grants, scholarships, other financial aid and resources that in combination total more than the established cost of education. Funds awarded above the cost of education will be cancelled and re-awarded to other deserving students. Federal guidelines to reduce funds will be followed for students receiving federal funds. Please refer to information on the verification of student eligibility for UI Scholarships for further details.
